— FROM DRUM TO DÉCOR

How a discarded oil drum becomes art

The steel drum art tradition began in Haiti's Croix-des-Bouquets and lives on in every piece we sell.

01

Rescue

Used 55-gallon oil drums are collected and cleaned — nothing new is mined or manufactured.

02

Flatten

The drum is burned to strip residue, then hammered flat into a single wide sheet of steel.

03

Cut

A design is chalked freehand, then chiseled and shear-cut entirely by hand — no two edges are identical.

04

Finish

Edges are smoothed, details are tooled, and the piece is sealed to protect its story for a lifetime.

The Sound of Steel: How Haiti's Recycled Drums Become Art

In the town of Croix-des-Bouquets, just outside Port-au-Prince, the sound of hammer on steel has rung out since the 1950s. What began as one blacksmith reshaping a discarded oil drum into a cross for a local cemetery grew into an entire art form — and today, it's the heartbeat of everything we make. A steel drum is never "just metal" to the artisans we work with. Before it becomes a wall hanging or a pendant, it's rescued from a scrapyard, burned clean, and beaten flat by hand until it becomes a single, unbroken sheet — a blank canvas with its own history still visible in every dent. From there, nothing is templated. A design is sketched in chalk directly onto...
